Fix Your Kohler Rite-Temp Shower Valve: GP76851 Mixer Cap & Pressure Balancing Unit Replacement

You know the drill. You're in the shower, someone flushes a toilet, and suddenly you're either freezing or getting scalded. Or maybe the handle has gotten stiff, the temperature adjustment barely works, or there's a slow drip from the tub spout that won't quit. Nine times out of ten on a Kohler Rite-Temp valve, the fix is the GP76851 combo kit — a new mixer cap and pressure balancing unit.

Kohler uses the Rite-Temp valve in probably half the homes built in the last 20 years. It's a pressure-balancing design: a spool inside the cartridge slides back and forth to compensate for pressure drops on the hot or cold side. When that spool gets crusted up with mineral deposits or the rubber seals harden, it stops doing its job. The GP76851 kit replaces both the mixer cap (GP77759) and the pressure balancing unit (GP500520) in one shot.

If you've priced a plumber for this, you know it's a $250-400 callout for what's essentially a 30-minute parts swap. The kit costs $44. The tools are basic. And you don't need to solder anything.

Is This Your Problem?

  • Temperature swings when another fixture runs. Classic pressure balancing failure. Toilet flushes, washing machine kicks on, sink runs — and your shower temp jumps or drops. A working balancing valve keeps the mix ratio steady.
  • Handle is hard to turn or won't go full-hot. The mixer cap has a plastic rotational stop that limits how far the handle travels. Mineral buildup or a worn stop ring makes the handle bind.
  • Tub spout drip. If water drips from the spout when the valve is off, the pressure balancing unit's seals aren't holding. The GP500520 unit inside this kit is the fix.
  • Water is only lukewarm, never hot. The balancing spool can get stuck in a mid-position, blending cold water even when the handle is on full-hot.
  • Valve is 5+ years old and acting up. Even if symptoms aren't severe, seals harden over time. If you're already pulling the trim off for any reason, replace both the mixer cap and balancing unit preventatively. It's cheap peace of mind.

Before You Start: Identify Your Valve

Rite-Temp valves have been around since the late 90s but there are variations. The GP76851 fits the 1/2" Rite-Temp valve with the single-handle pressure-balancing cartridge. This covers the vast majority of Kohler bath/shower installations from roughly 1999 onward.

If your trim plate says "Kohler" and has a single lever handle that rotates for temperature, you almost certainly have a Rite-Temp. To be sure: remove the handle and trim plate. If you see a round plastic mixer cap with a brass stem in the center, this kit fits.

This kit does NOT fit the older Kohler ceramic disc valves or the newer thermostatic (K-2971) valves. If you have separate hot and cold handles, wrong valve — stop here.

Tools & Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver (#2)
  • Flathead screwdriver (small, for prying)
  • Adjustable wrench or 7/8" socket
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Allen wrench set (usually 3/32" or 2.5mm for the handle set screw)
  • Silicone plumber's grease (Molykote 111 or similar — DO NOT use petroleum-based grease, it eats the rubber seals)
  • GP76851 kit (includes mixer cap GP77759 + pressure balancing unit GP500520)
  • Shop rags or a towel
  • Masking tape (optional — protect the trim finish)

Step-by-Step Replacement

  1. Turn off the water. Most Rite-Temp installations don't have integral stops. You're shutting off the main water supply to the house. Open a faucet at the lowest point in the house (basement sink or outdoor spigot) to drain the lines. This prevents water from dumping out when you pull the balancing unit.
  2. Remove the handle. Pry off the index cap (the little button in the center of the handle) with a small flathead. Behind it is an Allen set screw — typically 3/32". Loosen the set screw (don't fully remove it) and pull the handle straight off the stem.
  3. Remove the trim plate. Two Phillips screws hold the trim plate to the valve body. Remove them, then carefully pull the plate off. The rubber gasket behind it might be stuck — gentle prying with a flathead along the edge frees it.
  4. Remove the old mixer cap (GP77759). You're looking at the round plastic cap threaded onto the brass valve body. Turn it counterclockwise. If it's stuck — common with hard water deposits — wrap the jaws of your adjustable wrench with masking tape and gently turn. Don't crush it. Once loose, spin it off the rest of the way by hand.
  5. Remove the old pressure balancing unit (GP500520). Behind the mixer cap, the balancing unit is pressed into the valve body. Grab the center stem with needle-nose pliers and pull straight out. It should come out with steady pressure. If it's seized, wiggle it gently side to side while pulling. Don't twist — the unit isn't threaded. If it breaks apart (old plastic gets brittle), fish the pieces out with pliers. Make sure no debris stays in the valve body.
  6. Clean the valve body. Wipe the inside of the valve body with a rag. If you see white crusty mineral deposits, soak a rag in white vinegar and stuff it in the opening for 15 minutes, then wipe clean. You want the bore smooth so the new balancing unit seats properly.
  7. Install the new balancing unit. Apply a thin film of silicone grease to the O-rings on the new GP500520 unit. Align the unit with the bore — it's keyed, so it only goes in one orientation. Push it in firmly until it bottoms out. You should feel it seat. Don't hammer it.
  8. Install the new mixer cap. Apply silicone grease to the threads and the O-ring on the new GP77759 mixer cap. Thread it on by hand until snug, then give it about 1/8 turn with your wrench — just enough to compress the seal. Over-tightening cracks the plastic.
  9. Reinstall trim plate and handle. Position the trim plate, install the two Phillips screws. Slide the handle onto the stem, tighten the Allen set screw, snap on the index cap.
  10. Turn the water back on slowly. Open the main valve slowly — water hammer can damage the new seals. Check for leaks around the trim plate. Run the shower for 2-3 minutes on full-hot, then full-cold, then middle. Check for drips from the tub spout. If everything's dry, you're done.

Pro Tips

Silicone grease only. I can't stress this enough. Petroleum-based grease (wheel bearing grease, Vaseline, whatever's on the shelf) will swell and degrade the rubber seals inside the balancing unit. You'll be back in there in 6 months. Molykote 111 or any NSF-rated silicone plumber's grease. A $7 tube lasts a lifetime.

If the balancing unit won't come out: Spray some CLR or white vinegar into the valve body and let it sit 20 minutes. The spool is probably calcium-welded in place. Once the minerals dissolve, it pulls out with pliers. Don't use heat — the valve body is brass but the cartridge is plastic.

Check your water pressure. If you replace the balancing unit and still have temperature swings, your house pressure might be the problem. Rite-Temp valves work best between 20-80 PSI. Above 80 PSI, the balancing spool can't react fast enough. A pressure reducing valve (PRV) on your main line fixes this. Test with a $10 pressure gauge from any hardware store — screws onto an outdoor spigot.

While you're in there: clean the showerhead. You already turned the water off. Unscrew the showerhead and soak it in white vinegar for 30 minutes. Clears the clogged nozzles. Costs nothing. Your water pressure will thank you.

Order the GP76851 before you start. Nothing worse than taking the valve apart at 8 PM on a Sunday and realizing you don't have the part. Water's off, family's mad, hardware store is closed. Ask me how I know.

Does the GP76851 kit fit all Kohler Rite-Temp valves?

Fits the single-handle 1/2" Rite-Temp pressure-balancing valves installed from roughly 1999 to present. If you have a Kohler single-handle tub/shower, it's almost certain this kit fits. Does NOT fit the thermostatic valve (K-2971 series) or the older two-handle ceramic disc valves.

How long does the pressure balancing unit last?

Anywhere from 3 to 10 years, depending on water hardness and usage. Hard water kills them faster — mineral deposits on the spool. If your water is hard enough to leave white spots on glass, expect to replace the balancing unit every 3-5 years.

My handle is stiff but there's no leak. Can I just replace the mixer cap?

You can, but I wouldn't. The balancing unit is the same age as the mixer cap and it's buried behind it. Replace both while you're in there. The extra 5 minutes and $20 saves you doing this whole job again next year.

Why does my shower drip for a few seconds after I turn it off?

A few seconds of post-shutoff drip is normal — that's just water draining from the shower riser pipe. If it drips continuously for minutes or never stops, the balancing unit's seat seal is bad. That's the GP500520 in this kit.

Can I use aftermarket/OEM-equivalent parts or do I need genuine Kohler?
