Pool Filter Maintenance Guide: When to Replace Cartridges, Grilles, and O-Rings

Complete pool filter maintenance guide covering cartridge cleaning, when to replace filter cartridges and DE grids, pressure readings, and step-by-step instructions.

Why Pool Filter Maintenance Matters

Your pool filter is the heart of your water circulation system. A dirty, torn, or clogged filter cartridge forces your pump to work harder, increasing your electric bill and shortening the pump lifespan. A properly maintained pool filter can reduce pump energy consumption by up to 20%.

Signs Your Filter Cartridge Needs Replacement

  • Pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above normal: Even after cleaning, a worn-out cartridge will not drop back to baseline.
  • Water flow visibly reduced at the return jet: If you can barely feel water coming back, the cartridge is restricting flow.
  • Cartridge pleats are flattened or torn: The accordion-style pleats should stand upright. Flat pleats mean exhausted media.
  • Cleaning does not restore white color: If the cartridge stays gray/brown after soaking, the media is permanently clogged.
  • Filter is more than 2 years old: Most pool filter cartridges have a 1-2 season service life.

How to Clean Your Pool Filter Cartridge

  1. Turn off the pump and release pressure via the air relief valve on top of the filter tank.
  2. Remove the filter tank lid (for Hayward Star-Clear, turn the locking knob counter-clockwise). Lift out the cartridge.
  3. Hose off loose debris with a garden hose, working from top to bottom between the pleats. Do NOT use a pressure washer.
  4. Soak in filter cleaner for 8-12 hours to dissolve oils, sunscreen, and body lotions.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and inspect all pleats for damage before reinstalling.
  6. Lubricate the tank O-ring with silicone lubricant before closing the lid.

Filter Grid Assemblies: The DE Filter Alternative

For larger pools using Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters, the filter element is a grid assembly rather than a cartridge. These curved plastic grids with DE powder trap particles as small as 2-5 microns -- far finer than cartridge filters (20-40 microns). DE filter grids last 3-5 years, but the plastic frames eventually become brittle and crack. When you see DE powder blowing back into the pool, your grids have failed.

FAQ

How often should I clean my pool filter cartridge?

Clean every 2-4 weeks during peak swimming season, or whenever the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above your clean baseline.

Can I run my pool without a filter cartridge?

No. Running the pump without a filter element allows debris to enter the pump impeller and plumbing, potentially causing damage.

What is the difference between a filter cartridge and a DE grid?

Cartridge filters use pleated polyester media filtering to 20-40 microns. DE filters use fabric-covered grids with DE powder filtering to 2-5 microns. DE provides better clarity but requires more maintenance.
