Description
Replacement Fuel Filter for 1992-2002 Chevy GMC 6.5L Diesel — Suburban, Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Hummer H1
Keep your GM 6.5L diesel running clean with this replacement fuel filter. If you drive a Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, or Hummer H1 with the 6.5L engine, this is the filter element you need for your next oil change. Designed as a direct fit for the 10226035 filter housing, this cartridge includes the filter element, cap, and O-ring gasket — everything you need for a quick filter swap.
Why Regular Filter Changes Matter
The GM 6.5L diesel's Stanadyne DS4 injection pump and electronic injectors are precision-machined components — and they're expensive to replace. A clogged or bypassed fuel filter lets abrasive particles into the fuel system, scoring pistons and wearing injection pump internals. The cost comparison is stark:
-
Injection pump replacement: $1,200–$2,500 (parts + labor)
-
Set of 8 injectors: $400–$800
-
This filter element: $22.99
At 15,000-mile intervals, that's pennies per mile for fuel system protection.

Installation Tips
- Have a drain pan ready — the filter housing holds residual fuel
- Unscrew the old cap counterclockwise (use a strap wrench if overtightened)
- Remove old filter element and O-ring; clean the housing threads with a rag
- Lubricate the new O-ring with clean diesel fuel — never install dry
- Screw the new cap/filter assembly in by hand until the O-ring contacts the housing, then tighten only 1/4 turn more with a wrench
- Cycle ignition key ON/OFF 3-4 times to prime, then start and check for leaks
⚠️ Important: Do NOT overtighten the filter cap. The O-ring creates the seal — if you crank the cap down too hard, you'll compress the gasket unevenly and cause leaks. Hand-tight + 1/4 turn is all you need.
FAQ
Q: Does this fit my 1998 Chevy Suburban 6.5L diesel?
A: Yes. The Suburban 1500/2500 with the 6.5L diesel uses the 10226035 filter housing, and this element is the direct replacement.
Q: Does it come with a new O-ring?
A: Yes. Each filter element includes a new cap and O-ring gasket. Always use the new O-ring — reusing old seals is the #1 cause of post-change air leaks.
Q: How often should I change this filter?
A: Every 10,000-15,000 miles under normal conditions. If you tow heavy, run biodiesel blends, or operate in dusty conditions, replace every 7,500 miles. Always drain the water separator monthly.
Q: How long can I store unused filters?
A: Store in a cool, dry place and they'll last 5+ years. The cellulose media can absorb moisture if stored in high humidity, so keep the packaging sealed until use.
Q: Is this the same as the 10226035 assembly?
A: This is the filter element only — what you replace during regular maintenance. The 10226035 complete assembly includes the housing, heater, and bracket — you'd buy that if your housing is cracked or leaking.
