Complete Duramax oil change guide for LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, and L5P engines. Includes oil capacity chart, filter recommendations, and 3 maintenance items to tackle while you're under the hood.
The 6.6L Duramax isn't just another truck engine — it's a precision-built diesel workhorse engineered to pull 20,000+ pounds for hundreds of thousands of miles. But here's the thing most owners overlook: your oil is the only thing standing between a healthy turbo and a $4,000 repair bill.
GM recommends oil changes every 7,500 miles under normal conditions. Heavy towing? Cut that to 5,000. Short trips? Even more frequent. Diesel fuel dilution is real — every cold start introduces unburnt fuel into the oil, thinning viscosity and eating away at bearing protection.
In this guide, we'll walk through the complete Duramax oil change procedure — which filter to use, how much oil each generation needs, and the maintenance items you should tackle while you're under the hood.
Not all Duramax engines take the same amount of oil. Here's the breakdown:
| Engine Code | Years | Oil Capacity | Oil Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| LB7 | 2001–2004 | 10 quarts (9.5L) | 15W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic |
| LLY | 2004.5–2005 | 10 quarts (9.5L) | 15W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic |
| LBZ | 2006–2007 | 10 quarts (9.5L) | 15W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic |
| LMM | 2007.5–2010 | 10 quarts (9.5L) | 15W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic |
| LML | 2011–2016 | 10 quarts (9.5L) | 15W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic |
| L5P | 2017–2024 | 10 quarts (9.5L) | 15W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic |
Every Duramax from LB7 through L5P takes exactly 10 quarts. Buy the 2.5-gallon jugs — they're cheaper per quart and you'll use almost exactly one per change.
Three oils dominate the Duramax community for good reason:
Pro tip: If you're running a tuned truck or deleted emissions, stick with 5W-40 synthetic year-round. The turbo bearings will thank you.
The factory AC Delco PF2232 (or PF2266 for L5P) is a solid filter. But if you're looking for alternatives, here's the hierarchy:
Whatever you choose, avoid the cheapest no-name filters. A collapsed filter media at 6,000 miles can send debris straight through your turbo bearings.
Start the engine and let it idle for 3–5 minutes. Warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants out with it. Don't do this on a cold engine — cold 15W-40 moves like molasses.
Slide under the truck with your 15mm socket. The drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan, driver's side. Position your drain pan, crack the plug loose, and let it drain completely — at least 10 minutes. Go have a coffee.
Inspect the drain plug: If the copper crush washer is flattened or scored, replace it. A $1 washer is cheaper than an oil leak on your driveway.
The oil filter is located on the passenger side of the engine block, just behind the front axle. On 2001–2016 trucks (LB7–LML), it's accessible from underneath. On 2017+ L5P trucks, you may need to remove a small access panel.
Use your 76mm filter wrench to break the filter loose, then spin it off by hand. Watch out: there's still about half a quart in the filter — keep your drain pan underneath.
Fill the new filter about ¾ full with fresh oil, then dip your finger in oil and run it around the rubber gasket. This prevents the gasket from binding during install and ensures a good seal. Spin the filter on hand-tight, then give it ¾ of a turn more. Do not overtighten — you'll regret it next oil change.
Reinstall the drain plug with a fresh crush washer if needed. Torque spec is 18 ft-lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench, snug it down firmly but don't lean on it.
Pour in 9 quarts first, then start the engine and let it run for 30 seconds. Check for leaks at the filter and drain plug. Shut it off, wait 2 minutes for the oil to settle, then check the dipstick. Top off to the full mark — you'll typically need 9.5 to 10 quarts total.
Turn the key to "On" (don't start). Press the gas pedal to the floor three times within 5 seconds. The "Change Engine Oil" light should flash and reset to 100%. If that doesn't work on newer models, use the DIC menu: Info → Oil Life → press and hold the checkmark.
Since you already have tools out, these jobs add 15 minutes each and can save you a separate shop visit:
GM recommends fuel filter changes every 15,000 miles, but many Duramax owners change it with every other oil change. A clogged fuel filter starves your CP3/CP4 injection pump — and that's a $3,000+ repair you don't want. We stock 1R-0750 secondary fuel filters for LB7 through LML engines — the same Cat-spec filter used in heavy equipment applications.
Cat-spec filtration for 2001–2016. LB7/LLY/LBZ/LMM/LML. Replace every other oil change.
Diesel engines gulp massive amounts of air — up to 900 CFM under full load on a tuned truck. A dirty air filter increases turbo lag and can even trigger DTCs. If your filter looks dark or you can't see light through it, swap it. Our A3231C air filter fits 2017–2019 L5P trucks and costs less than a tank of diesel.
Direct OEM replacement for L5P engines. Proper airflow = proper power. Replace every 30k miles.
On 2005–2013 trucks (LLY, LBZ, LMM), the factory fuel filter housing is plastic and notorious for cracking at the bleeder screw threads or heater element connector. If you spot fuel residue or smell diesel near the filter housing, don't wait — a leaking housing introduces air into the fuel system. Our replacement fuel filter head assembly is an exact-fit upgrade with an aluminum bleeder screw.

Yes, and you should. Synthetic 5W-40 flows better at cold start, resists thermal breakdown better, and there's zero downside. Your engine won't leak or burn more oil from the switch — that's an old wives' tale.
GM's severe service interval is 5,000 miles. If you're towing 10,000+ lbs regularly, send a sample to Blackstone Labs at 5,000 miles and let the TBN (Total Base Number) tell you whether you can extend.
No. The L5P (2017+) uses the PF2266, while LB7 through LML use the PF2232. They are not interchangeable.
Rotella T6 5W-40 or Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40, changed every 5,000 miles. Tuned trucks generate more soot and fuel dilution. Don't push past 7,500 miles on a tuned engine.
The Duramax OLM is actually smarter than most — it tracks engine revolutions, temperature, and load, not just mileage. If it says 30%, you still have life left, but if you're towing or running a tune, change it early. Oil is cheap. Engines aren't.
A Duramax oil change takes 30 minutes in your driveway and costs under $80 in materials. The alternative — a turbo replacement or bearing job — starts at $3,000 and puts your truck in the shop for a week. Keep it simple, stick to the schedule, and never skip the fuel filter while you're under there.
