
GF652/FF5026 Fuel Filter Swap on 1988-2006 GM Trucks: 20 Minutes, One Wrench, No Dashboard Lights

If your 88-06 GM truck stumbles on acceleration, takes longer to start, or just feels down on power and you can't remember the last time you changed the fuel filter, start there. The GF652 (crosses to FF5026, GF652, 33481, G3727) is an inline filter mounted on the driver's side frame rail. It catches everything between the tank and the throttle body or spider injectors. When it clogs, your fuel pump works overtime, your pressure drops, and your engine runs lean.
Inline fuel filters don't have sensors. No check engine light, no dash warning. The symptoms are the only warning you get:
On TBI trucks (88-95), fuel pressure is lower (9-13 psi), so a restriction hits harder. On Vortec trucks (96-2006), the CSFI spider needs 55-62 psi at the rail. A dirty filter drops that number fast.
1. Relieve fuel pressure. Pull the fuel pump relay (in the under-hood fuse box, usually labeled FUEL PUMP), start the engine, and let it run until it stalls. Crank it once more for 3 seconds. Now the lines aren't pressurized. Re-install the relay after.
2. Find the filter. Driver's side frame rail, roughly under the driver's seat area. On 88-98 C/K trucks, it's in a bracket with a hose clamp or two. On 99-06 Silverado/Sierra, it's in a plastic clip bracket. You don't need to jack up the truck unless it's lowered — most stock height trucks have enough clearance to reach it from underneath.
3. Note the flow direction. The old filter has an arrow stamped on the body. It points toward the engine. Take a picture with your phone. You'd be amazed how many people guess wrong on the new one.
4. Disconnect the outlet side first (engine side). On threaded fittings: 16mm flare wrench on the fitting, 20mm on the filter nut. Hold the filter nut steady, turn the line fitting. Do not turn the filter — you'll twist the hard line. On quick-connect fittings: push the plastic retainer tab in with a screwdriver and pull the line off. Some 2003+ models use the white plastic clip style — use the disconnect tool.
5. Disconnect the inlet side (tank side). Same procedure. Expect some fuel to drip — that's the residual in the line between the tank and filter. Maybe 4-6 ounces. The rag catches it.
6. Remove the old filter from the bracket. If it's held by a hose clamp, loosen the clamp and slide it out. If it's in a plastic clip bracket, push the tabs and pull.
7. Install the new iFJF GF652/FF5026 filter. Arrow points toward the engine. Slide it into the bracket and secure it before connecting the lines. The filter should sit snug — if it rattles, tighten the bracket.
8. Reconnect the inlet line, then the outlet. Threaded fittings: start by hand, tighten with the flare wrench. The spec is about 18-22 ft-lb — which in practice means "snug plus a flat." Don't gorilla it; these are flare fittings, they seal by the flare angle, not by crushing force. Quick-connect: push until you hear the click, then tug to verify it's locked.
9. Prime and check for leaks. Cycle the key to ON (don't start) for 3 seconds, then OFF. Do this twice. The pump will pressurize the system. Look under the truck at both fittings with a flashlight. Any wetness = re-tighten or re-seat. Start the engine, let it idle 60 seconds. Check again.
10. Road test. Drive it. Accelerate hard. If the stumble is gone and the pump is quieter, you fixed it. If it still stumbles, you have a different problem (weak pump, clogged sock filter in the tank, or a failing fuel pressure regulator).
Pro Tip 1: The #1 mistake on this job is twisting the hard line. Hold the filter body still with one wrench, turn the fitting with the other. If you twist the line, you'll kink it, and now you're replacing a fuel line too. A 3/8" steel line isn't forgiving.
Pro Tip 2: If you smell fuel inside the cab after the job, you pinched the O-ring on a quick-connect fitting. Disconnect, check the O-ring for cuts, apply a tiny dab of clean engine oil, and reconnect. Do not use silicone spray or grease — it swells the O-ring.
Pro Tip 3: The GF652 is backward-compatible with every GM truck from 1988-2006 that uses an inline filter, but it's NOT the right filter for 2007+ Silverado/Sierra — those trucks have the filter integrated into the fuel pump module in the tank. Different system entirely.
Pro Tip 4: If the truck sat for more than a year before this filter change, the gas in the tank is probably varnished. Changing the filter will help, but you may clog the new one in 500 miles. Plan on a second filter change and consider draining the tank if the gas smells like paint thinner.
